Everything in the editor role, plus the part we cannot do without judgement.
Our system generates these videos automatically. The pacing is flat and the variety runs out. A senior editor takes what the system produces, rebuilds it properly, and tells us what the system got wrong, so the next thousand videos are better because of what you noticed on this one.
What you would do
- Beat the machine, then explain how. We send you a video our system made, the brief it worked from, and the same images it had. You make a better one and tell us what you changed and why.
- Set the standard. Your work becomes the reference everything else is measured against.
- Solve the variety problem. A salon needs about thirty videos a month and they cannot all feel the same. This is the hardest thing we have and nobody has solved it here yet.
- Tell us what is wrong with our thinking. We have a library of named video formats. Some of it is probably wrong. We would like to know which parts.
The person we are looking for
- You can look at a piece of work and say what specifically is wrong with it, and be right. Not "it needs more energy". "The hook lands two seconds late and the third shot is doing nothing."
- You will tell us our system is wrong. With reasons. Politely is fine, vaguely is not.
- You can explain your judgement, not just apply it. Half this role is writing down why, clearly enough that we can build it in.
- You think in systems. You notice when the same problem keeps recurring in different clothes.
Requirements
- Several years of short-form work, with a portfolio that shows range rather than one style
- Evidence you have improved someone else's process, not only delivered against it
- Fluent written English. Half the deliverable is written explanation
- Reliable power and internet, and a backup you can describe
This role is not for you if
- You are not excellent at the craft. We do not want a strategist who stopped editing.
- You find it hard to criticise work you have been handed. Deference is the one thing we cannot use. If you tell us it is fine when it is not, we both waste a month.
- You want to write documents rather than make videos. You would be in the edit most weeks.
- You need the spec handed to you. Some of what we ask will be half-formed and your job includes pushing back on it.
You do not need to code, and you will never be asked to work in our rendering framework. Your judgement gets translated into the system by someone else.
